Piwigo is absolutely not a Flickr clone. Flickr has started in 2004… and was aquired by Yahoo in 2005. Piwigo was born in 2002 with the name PhpWebGallery, see version history on http://piwigo.org/basics/archive

Photo galleries on the web are much older than Flickr, Picasa Web Album (Google+ Photos actually) and Facebook :-)

Anyway, being compared to Flickr is very positive for us :-) Flickr does a very good job, and in my opinion the main “problems” with Flickr are:

1) the lack of customization
2) you have to accept Yahoo Terms of Use

Piwigo is very much like WordPress : on one side you can install it on your own hosting which is nice when you have a few technical skills, on the other side you can open an account on http://piwigo.com and play with Piwigo within a few minutes.
