MacLone hasn't played with sabayon recently. You have the option of using EITHER source (portage) or binary (entropy). There is NO compiling at all during the install process.

With Sabayon 3.5 portage is only an out of the box option for the DVD. Pod (the cd edition) is entropy only. If you want to use portage on 3.5 Pod, you must add it post-install (there's a detailed set of instructions on the wiki). As stated in my previous post, portage is still an out of the box option on the DVD version.

You don't have to compile anything, Sabayon is based upon Gentoo but it has it's own package manager as well, and yes it is package based NOT source based, the package manager is called equo/entropy and spritz is the GUI.

Sabayon mirrors are slow but NO, that was not the problem, the problem is compiling everything and yes, it takes at least 8 hours.
Sabayon is a great effort based in an awful gentoo base

You should try the DVD version - a lot more is included, and well, it's not quite so glitchy. The sabayon mini-editions were never quite geared to the new user. As far as package management, Spritz is still young. You may want to take a look at the command line entropy client which is called equo. A bit faster than spritz. Also, with later revisions, more speed issues are being taken care of. I still wouldn't consider spritz to be speedy, but it's getting better.. The slow speed of your upgrade was most likely due to having an older version of entropy and it's clients installed. Upgrading them before performing the system updates would have yielded you better results. There's also a possibility you ran into a rather old bug that popped up in virtual machines, where the upgrade would only stay active as long as the VM had the focus.

Another thing you should be aware of, the entropy package manager (which is the only package manager available for sabayon 3.5 pod) is binary only. Pod needs to have portage added post-install, and there's a great guide on the sabayon wiki for that. Portage is not missing from the dvd version. Also take note that entropy packages are still gentoo packages at heart. It's just that they've been pre-compiled on the build server, using the USE flags there. This is generally fine for people who don't feel like messing with their own make.conf.
